VIRGINIA BEACH
A bicyclist was killed this morning when he was hit by an S.U.V. while riding on Shore Drive.
Daniel Wayne Hersh, 54, was riding eastbound on Shore Drive near Starfish Road when he was struck by the right side of a Ford Explorer also traveling east on Shore Drive, said Virginia Beach police spokesman Officer Adam Bernstein.
Hersh, of the 2300 block of Windway Lane in Virginia Beach, was taken to the hospital, but was pronounced dead around 9 a.m.
Alcohol and speed do not appear to have played a role, Bernstein said. No charges have been filed against the woman driving the Explorer, although the crash is still under investigation.

We saw the accident scene (after the ambulance had left) on our way to church Sunday morning. I had just biked that stretch of road the afternoon before. I had a pit in my stomach all morning, and when I saw the article, my heart sank. If you know his family, please let them know that our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Colby-
Can you provide specific information on the location? The Police Department said only that it was near the intersection of Shore Drive & Starfish, eastbound.
It was right in front of the BP station on the South side of Shore Dr. The bike was in the middle of the road, his shoes and some gear were in the intersection, and the car was pulled over to the right edge in front of the gas station. Hope you don't mind me referencing your blog in a letter I wrote. I cc'd your e-mail.
